What Social Security Will Do During Shutdown

A prior blog went over all the things the Social Security Administration would halt during the current government shutdown, which is now expected to last more than a week. This was valuable information to inform those who have applied for Social Security disability what to expect and what not to expect to be done on their claim during the shutdown.

Even though the federal government has shutdown it doesn’t mean Social Security has stopped operating entirely. There are still some duties a limited Social Security staff will accommodate customers with.

You’ve already been informed that disability hearing centers remain open and hearings that have already been scheduled will proceed as usual, but no new hearings will be scheduled during the shutdown. Below is a list of nine different services Social Security will continue to work on during the federal government shutdown.

  • Social Security claims representatives will continue to assist people who wish to apply for retirement or disability benefits.
  • Social Security will continue to assist people who wish to appeal unfavorable decisions on disability claims.
  • Those who need to change an address with Social Security or sign-up for direct deposit may still call Social Security to assist.
  • Social Security will continue to accept reports of death and verify or change citizenship status.
  • You are still able to go to Social Security to replace a lost or stolen Social Security card.
  • Social Security will still issue “critical payments” during the federal government shutdown.
  • Social Security will continue to change representative payees and process a change in your living arrangement or income for SSI recipients only.
