To increase service options amid budget cuts, Social Security has turned to technology to better assist Social Security recipients and applicants.
Those who visit www.socialsecurity.gov by Smartphone (Android, Blackberry, iPhone, and Windows devices) will be redirected to the agency’s mobile-friendly site.
At this site users can access a mobile version of Social Security’s Frequently Asked Questions, an interactive Social Security number decision tree to help identify documents needed for a new or replacement Social Security card. Users may also listen to publications in both English and Spanish.
Each year, more than 35 million Social Security web page views come from Smartphones, according to the agency.
Carolyn Colvin, acting Social Security commissioner, said the new technology is a step forward in assisting the needs of the public in today’s fast-paced technological world.
“We are committed to meeting the changing needs of the American people and the launch of our new mobile site helps reinforce our online presence and adaptability in technology,” Colvin said in a press release from the agency. “I encourage all Smartphone users looking for Social Security information to take advantage of our new mobile site.”
In addition to basic information, Smartphone users can access more advanced services through creating a personal My Social Security account to get an online statement, learn more about services and connect with Social Security through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest.
Colvin said that she hopes through better use of technology, Social Security can leverage better and more innovative ways to assist the public during uncertain funding mechanisms for the agency in the future.
“We must find more ways to meet the needs of the American public without compromising service,” she said.
