Senate Committee Advances Saul Nomination
A few days ago the Senate Finance Committee, by a unanimous vote favorably moved on the nomination of Andrew Saul to become the next commissioner of the Social Security Administration.
The following is a synopsis of the committee’s report.
Results of Executive Session to Consider Favorably Reporting the Nominations of Andrew M. Saul, of New York, to be Commissioner of Social Security, Gordon Hartogensis, of Connecticut, to be Director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation for a term of five years, and Courtney Dunbar Jones, of Virginia, to be a Judge of the United States Tax Court for a term of fifteen years.
To consider favorably reporting the nomination of Andrew M. Saul, of New York, to be Commissioner of Social Security for the term expiring January 19, 2025, approved by roll call vote of 28 Ayes and 0 Nays.
Ayes: Grassley, Crapo, Roberts, Enzi, Cornyn, Thune, Burr, Isakson, Portman, Toomey, Scott, Cassidy (proxy), Lankford, Daines, Young, Wyden, Stabenow, Cantwell, Menendez, Carper, Cardin, Brown, Bennet, Casey, Warner, Whitehouse, Hassan, and Cortez Masto.
This means that Saul is one step closer to being the new Social Security commissioner. Since Michael Astrue resigned as the commissioner in 2013 Social Security has had commissioners in acting roles under President Barack Obama and now President Donald Trump.
