Social Security has, for quite some time now, attempted to provide more services online so that people don’t have to face long wait times standing in line at a Social Security office or on hold when they call Social Security. Not everyone has Internet access, but most people do and would rather attempt to access Social Security services online, but one option remains unavailable.
The option to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is available online, but there is no option to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SSI program closely relates to the SSDI program as it is a needs-based program for the elderly and disabled. Unfortunately, if you want to apply for SSI you have to either visit a Social Security office or do it by phone. On its website, Social Security clearly indicates that you cannot apply for SSI online. “We do not have SSI applications online. Most of the forms to apply for SSI are not designed for self-completion. Our claims representative interviews you and uses a computer to complete the forms with information you give us or someone else gives us on your behalf,” according to Social Security’s website.
Because there is no application process online to file for SSI, the easiest way to complete the SSI application process is to schedule an SSI phone appointment by either calling your local Social Security office or by calling the national toll free number 1-800-772-1213. It can take a while holding until you are actually able to speak with a live person, but this remains the best way to file an SSI application. Initially Social Security will ask a few preliminary questions and set the application appointment for a later date in which they will call you.
