A recent report coming out of Southern Illinois identified a terrifying episode where a Jackson County, Illinois man has been indicted for threatening to kill an employee of the Social Security Administration. It is an appalling story, but unfortunately not all that surprising.
According to WSIL, the ABC affiliate in Carbondale, IL, Steven Vizcarrondo, 22, allegedly threatened to murder a Social Security employee in late January, according to prosecutors. Vizcarrondo was arrested February 5 and is being held without bail pending a jury trial, which is set for April 6. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
There is no indication of why Vizcarrondo allegedly made these threats, but many people become extremely frustrated and angry with Social Security, especially when going through the disability process. This is because Social Security denies applicants at a very high rate at the initial stages of the Social Security disability process. Regardless of Social Security’s high denial rates, there should be no tolerance of threats made to Social Security employees, who are for the most part, doing their job and following the rules set forth by the Social Security Administration.
As a Social Security disability law office, we know all too well the frustration of disapproved claims of people who are clearly disabled, but you have to work within the system. This story should be a warning about those who get frustrated with denials, backlogs and all the correspondence from Social Security that seems like it is an attempt to blind a applicant with paperwork, you must keep your composure and follow the rules and regulations within the system.
