I came across a story this month about a Louisiana man who was recently arrested for fraudulently receiving Social Security disability payments for the last year while he was working and earning substantial income, which is a big NO-NO.
When a person receives Social Security disability they are claiming that they are unable to work at a full-time level and earn substantial income. This man arrested in Louisiana allegedly collected over $83,000 in Social Security disability benefits while he was operating not only one, but two businesses earning substantial income.
We tend to hear about these cases every once in a while and they usually involve a single person or a small group of people who have conspired to defraud the government of Social Security disability payments when they did not deserve them.
These types of stories should outrage all of us and the people who commit these egregious acts should be punished to the full extent of the law.
The one thing we do not hear nearly enough of are all the people who are deserving of benefits, who are truly disabled, but are rejected for benefits because Social Security insists they can work. For many of these people, they continue to fight and finally prove their conditions are disabling and end up getting benefits, but some are no so lucky and even pass away before the process is over.
That’s right, many people who are going through the disability process end up dying before they ever see benefits due to the fact that the Social Security disability process can be a long one and that many of the people who apply are sometimes dealing with life-threatening disabilities.
We hear too much of the people who are receiving benefits who are not deserving and too little about all the people who are deserving, but pass away before they can collect benefits from an agency that was established to take care of its citizens.
